Abstract :
One of the frontier research areas in nuclear physics today
involves making measurements with beams of radioactive nuclei,
and facilities with this capability are now being operated,
constructed, and planned around the world.
One of the major justifications for these facilities is that they
are ideally suited for studies of stellar explosions. Explosions
such as novae, X-ray bursters, X-ray pulsars, and supernovae are
important because they generate enormous amounts of energy, they
dramatically effect the evolution of the stars, and
they synthesize many of the elements that make up our bodies and our world.
Nuclear reactions on radioactive isotopes play a crucial role in
these explosions, and these reaction rates (for the most part) have never
been measured in the laboratory. While the astrophysics community
now has the capability to make detailed observations of exploding
stars, measurements in the nuclear laboratory are often required
to decipher these observations. I will discuss five recent measurements
of such reactions made at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam
Facility (HRIBF) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the only facility in
the U.S. to provide beams of reaccelerated radioactive nuclei produced
on-line. I will also discuss the astrophysical implications of our
measurements, the astrophysical modelings of the explosions that we
are building in-house, our related nuclear data evaluation efforts,
and our future research plans.
